Back in April of 1992, a not-quite-21-year-old Jesper Widén was asked by his coworkers, Becky Kolourus and Leslie Randel, if he could be the third driver for their Hiking the Trails group. (The class was originally named Walking the Trails but too many people complained and said they felt they were misled.) He gladly excepted the offer and later could not believe his fortune. As he stood upon the Devil's Chair and gazed out toward the basin below, he couldn't help but think, "I'm getting paid for this?" Actually, that's truly how this whole thing started for me. Outside of an eight month getaway to Europe (July 1994-February 1995) I have been involved with this class ever since. I really felt the need to schedule more challenging hikes, so I branched off to form my own group called Peak Performers in 1996 (later changed to Hitting the Trails in 1998). Founding Mothers Becky and Leslie eventually faded out and Steve Sugarman and I shared the responsibilities of running both classes. His commute from Malibu to Irvine was just too much, so when he dropped out, my friend Robb Gardner chipped in. Now, the class is down to just one van, and that means only one driver...me. I live for these hikes and hope to continue them for as long as I can. Listed below are all the hikes I could find documentation of in my hiking files.
